Abstract:We highlight a failure mode of large reasoning models on questions with insufficient information: models may recognize that a problem is under-specified, yet still continue reasoning and produce unsupported final answers instead of abstaining. We formalize this mismatch as the detection-to-abstention gap, where detected insufficiency fails to translate into final abstention. This gap is especially concerning in high-risk domains such as medical AI, where answers based on incomplete evidence can be more harmful than refusal. To close this gap, we propose Judge-Then-Solve (JTS), a trajectory-level reasoning-control framework that trains models to make an explicit answerability commitment before solution generation. Rather than treating abstention as a final-answer style, JTS casts it as a control decision: the model either proceeds to solve or terminates early based on its answerability judgment. We instantiate this policy through supervised warm-up and missing-premise reinforcement learning with consistency and length-shaping rewards. Experiments on dense and MoE reasoning models show that JTS substantially improves reliable abstention across datasets and pushes Abstention@Detection (A@D) to near-saturation, indicating that models not only detect missing information but also act on that detection. By terminating unanswerable trajectories immediately after the answerability judgment, JTS reduces unnecessary reasoning and improves inference efficiency when continued deliberation would amplify unsupported assumptions. We also observe that missing-premise training can alter reasoning behavior on difficult but answerable problems, reducing unproductive self-reflection. These results suggest that abstention under insufficient information is a key form of reasoning control for deploying reasoning models safely and efficiently.
Abstract:In sequential CTR prediction, a central design question is at what granularity the target should interact with the user behaviour sequence. Existing models mainly follow two routes. Raw-item architectures such as DIN let the target score each item in the sequence directly. This relies on well-trained item embeddings and becomes brittle for sparse items. Latent-query architectures such as HyFormer, MixFormer, and OneTrans build query representations by combining the target with other information. This is more robust across item-density regimes but blunter: target-specific control is diluted. We propose LENS to restore target-specific control within these coarser bottlenecks. LENS has two modules: a Target-Conditioned Query Gate (TCQG) for query activation and a Target-Conditioned Position Bias (TCPB) for history retrieval. We further introduce Query-Specific Position Bias (QueryPos), a simple static position-aware reference for latent-query backbones. Across three representative latent-query backbones and four datasets, the combined QueryPos+LENS design achieves positive total-gain point estimates in all twelve evaluated backbone--dataset cells. We also identify a density-dependent conditioning rule: as item density decreases, the optimal condition source shifts from item-only to item-plus-sequence.
Abstract:Multimodal latent-space reasoning aims to replace explicit thinking with images by performing visual reasoning directly in a compact latent space. However, existing approaches largely rely on visual supervision and produce latent representations that lack sufficient semantic richness, limiting their ability to support diverse region-level reasoning tasks. In this work, we introduce Semantic-Enriched Latent Visual Reasoning (SLVR), a two-stage learning framework that enriches latent representations with attribute-level visual semantics and aligns them with diverse reasoning objectives. In the first stage, SLVR learns semantically enriched region-centric latents under fine-grained attribute supervision. In the second stage, we design Multi-query Group Relative Policy Optimization (M-GRPO) to align latent representations across multiple queries grounded in the same region. To support this framework, we construct SLV-Set, comprising approximately 400K region-level attribute annotations and 800K multi-query question answering samples, and introduce SV-QA, a benchmark that evaluates latent reasoning under semantic variation. Experiments demonstrate that SLVR improves the robustness and semantic consistency of latent visual reasoning compared to existing baselines.
Abstract:Recent advances in generative video models are increasingly driven by post-training and test-time scaling, both of which critically depend on the quality of video reward models (RMs). An ideal reward model should predict accurate rewards that align with human preferences across diverse scenarios. However, existing paradigms face a fundamental dilemma: \textit{Discriminative RMs} regress rewards directly on features extracted by multimodal large language models (MLLMs) without explicit reasoning, making them prone to shortcut learning and heavily reliant on massive data scaling for generalization. In contrast, \textit{Generative RMs} with Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning exhibit superior interpretability and generalization potential, as they leverage fine-grained semantic supervision to internalize the rationales behind human preferences. However, they suffer from inherent optimization bottlenecks due to the coupling of reasoning and scoring within a single autoregressive inference chain. To harness the generalization benefits of CoT reasoning while mitigating the training instability of coupled reasoning and scoring, we introduce DeScore, a training-efficient and generalizable video reward model. DeScore employs a decoupled ``think-then-score'' paradigm: an MLLM first generates an explicit CoT, followed by a dedicated discriminative scoring module consisting of a learnable query token and a regression head that predicts the final reward. DeScore is optimized via a two-stage framework: (1) a discriminative cold start incorporating a random mask mechanism to ensure robust scoring capabilities, and (2) a dual-objective reinforcement learning stage that independently refines CoT reasoning quality and calibrates the final reward, ensuring that higher-quality reasoning directly translates to superior model performance.
Abstract:Heat exposure connects the built environment and public health, directly shaping the livability and sustainability of urban areas. Understanding the spatial heterogeneity of heat exposure and its drivers is vital for climate-adaptive urban planning. However, most planning-oriented studies rely on land surface temperature (LST), and whether LST adequately represents human heat exposure and how it differs from physiologically relevant heat stress remains insufficiently examined. Here, adopting Landsat-retrieved 30-m LST and GPU-accelerated 1-m universal thermal climate index (UTCI) in Singapore, this study establishes a comprehensive "Modeling-Comparing-Assessing" framework to systematically evaluate the spatial and mechanistic discrepancies between the two metrics. We further investigate pronounced non-stationary and threshold-based quantitative relationships of the two metrics with urban factors by employing a novel geographically weighted XGBoost (GW-XGBoost) and generalized additive model (GAM) workflow. Our results demonstrate notable discrepancies in spatial patterns of LST and UTCI, along with substantial spatial heterogeneity in how 2D and 3D urban factors impact these two thermal metrics, as revealed by explainable GW-XGBoost models (global out-of-bag R2 = 0.855 for LST and 0.905 for UTCI, respectively). Crucially, spatially explicit SHAP interprets that sky view factor plays a central role in explaining UTCI variability but exhibits a comparatively marginal independent contribution to LST, indicating that LST inadequately captures shading-driven and radiative processes governing actual human heat stress. Notably, SHAP-GAM analysis indicates that higher albedo is associated with increased UTCI. These novel findings provide evidence for integrating physiologically relevant thermal indices to inform targeted heat risk management and climate-adaptive urban planning.
Abstract:Despite remarkable progress toward general-purpose video models, a critical question remains unanswered: how far are these models from achieving true multimodal reasoning? Existing benchmarks fail to address this question rigorously, as they remain constrained by straightforward task designs and fragmented evaluation metrics that neglect complex multimodal reasoning. To bridge this gap, we introduce CLVG-Bench, an evaluation framework designed to probe video models' zero-shot reasoning capabilities via Context Learning in Video Generation. CLVG-Bench comprises more than 1,000 high-quality, manually annotated metadata across 6 categories and 47 subcategories, covering complex scenarios including physical simulation, logical reasoning, and interactive contexts. To enable rigorous and scalable assessment, we further propose an Adaptive Video Evaluator (AVE) that aligns with human expert perception using minimal annotations, delivering interpretable textual feedback across diverse video context tasks. Extensive experiments reveal a striking answer to our central question: while state-of-the-art (SOTA) video models, such as Seedance 2.0, demonstrate competence on certain understanding and reasoning subtasks, they fall substantially short with logically grounded and interactive generation tasks (achieving success rates <25% and ~0%, respectively), exposing multimodal reasoning and physical grounding as critical bottlenecks. By systematically quantifying these limitations, the proposed method provides actionable feedbacks and a clear roadmap toward truly robust, general-purpose video models. Abstract:Few-shot fine-grained image classification aims to recognize subcategories with high visual similarity using only a limited number of annotated samples. Existing metric learning-based methods typically rely solely on spatial domain features. Confined to this single perspective, models inevitably suffer from inherent texture biases, entangling essential structural details with high-frequency background noise. Furthermore, lacking cross-view geometric constraints, single-view metrics tend to overfit this noise, resulting in structural instability under few-shot conditions. To address these issues, this paper proposes the Frequency-Enhanced Dual-Subspace Network (FEDSNet). Specifically, FEDSNet utilizes the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and a low-pass filtering mechanism to explicitly isolate low-frequency global structural components from spatial features, thereby suppressing background interference. Truncated Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is employed to construct independent, low-rank linear subspaces for both spatial texture and frequency structural features. An adaptive gating mechanism is designed to dynamically fuse the projection distances from these dual views. This strategy leverages the structural stability of the frequency subspace to prevent the spatial subspace from overfitting to background features. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets - CUB-200-2011, Stanford Cars, Stanford Dogs, and FGVC-Aircraft - demonstrate that FEDSNet exhibits excellent classification performance and robustness, achieving highly competitive results compared to existing metric learning algorithms. Complexity analysis further confirms that the proposed network achieves a favorable balance between high accuracy and computational efficiency, providing an effective new paradigm for few-shot fine-grained visual recognition.
Abstract:The transition from image to video understanding requires vision-language models (VLMs) to shift from recognizing static patterns to reasoning over temporal dynamics such as motion trajectories, speed changes, and state transitions. Yet current post-training methods fall short due to two critical limitations: (1) existing datasets often lack temporal-centricity, where answers can be inferred from isolated keyframes rather than requiring holistic temporal integration; and (2) training data generated by proprietary models contains systematic errors in fundamental temporal perception, such as confusing motion directions or misjudging speeds. We introduce SynRL, a post-training framework that teaches models temporal primitives, the fundamental building blocks of temporal understanding including direction, speed, and state tracking. Our key insight is that these abstract primitives, learned from programmatically generated synthetic videos, transfer effectively to real-world scenarios. We decompose temporal understanding into short-term perceptual primitives (speed, direction) and long-term cognitive primitives, constructing 7.7K CoT and 7K RL samples with ground-truth frame-level annotations through code-based video generation. Despite training on simple geometric shapes, SynRL achieves substantial improvements across 15 benchmarks spanning temporal grounding, complex reasoning, and general video understanding. Remarkably, our 7.7K synthetic CoT samples outperform Video-R1 with 165K real-world samples. We attribute this to fundamental temporal skills, such as tracking frame by frame changes and comparing velocity, that transfer effectively from abstract synthetic patterns to complex real-world scenarios. This establishes a new paradigm for video post-training: video temporal learning through carefully designed synthetic data provides a more cost efficient scaling path.
Abstract:Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) and Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) have significantly advanced the reasoning capabilities of large language models. Extending these methods to multimodal settings, however, faces a critical challenge: the instability of std-based normalization, which is easily distorted by extreme samples with nearly positive or negative rewards. Unlike pure-text LLMs, multimodal models are particularly sensitive to such distortions, as both perceptual and reasoning errors influence their responses. To address this, we characterize each sample by its difficulty, defined through perceptual complexity (measured via visual entropy) and reasoning uncertainty (captured by model confidence). Building on this characterization, we propose difficulty-aware group normalization (Durian), which re-groups samples by difficulty levels and shares the std within each group. Our approach preserves GRPO's intra-group distinctions while eliminating sensitivity to extreme cases, yielding significant performance gains across multiple multimodal reasoning benchmarks.
Abstract:Video foundation models aim to integrate video understanding, generation, editing, and instruction following within a single framework, making them a central direction for next-generation multimodal systems. However, existing evaluation benchmarks remain fragmented and limited in scope, as they each target a single task, rely on task-specific metrics, and typically use short or simple video clips. As a result, they do not capture the unified capabilities that these models are designed to deliver. To address this gap, we introduce UniVBench, a benchmark purpose-built for evaluating video foundation models across four core abilities: video understanding, video generation, video editing, and a newly proposed task, video reconstruction, which assesses how faithfully a model can reproduce video content it has encountered. Our benchmark substantially expands the complexity of evaluation by incorporating 200 high-quality, diverse and multi-shot videos, each paired with detailed captions, multi-format editing instructions, and reference images. All videos are human-created and carefully validated, offering richer cinematic information than prior benchmarks. In addition, we develop a unified agentic evaluation system (UniV-Eval) that standardizes prompting, instruction parsing, and scoring across all tasks, enabling fair, scalable, and reproducible comparisons of unified video models. By grounding evaluation in instruction-based multi-shot video tasks, UniVBench provides the first framework for measuring the integrated capabilities that video foundation models aim to achieve. Extensive human annotations ensure our evaluation aligns with human judgment, enabling rigorous assessment and accelerating progress toward robust video intelligence.
